Taking the Polar Plunge

Some talk the talk Some walk the walk Sunday some took the plunge. I would do many things to promote literacy and to support the Chicago Special Olympics (my son was a coach when he was in Chicago), but taking the Polar Plunge definitely does NOT fall in that category. Fortunately, there are others, apparently… Read more »

Imagine a World Where Everyone Can Read…

LitWorld’s World Read Aloud Day, which was established to raise awareness about the importance of literacy, is coming up March 5 and has been on my mind. How serendipitous to come across a video—actually, a commercial—that is essentially about the transformative power of literacy.

World Read Aloud Day and the Kid Lit Blog Hop

World Read Aloud Day, always held on the first Wednesday of March, falls on the 5th this year. Last year more than one million people participated in this movement established by LitWorld, a wonderful non-profit organization that celebrates the power of word and story and promotes global literacy through their many worthwhile campaigns.

Author Interview and Valentine’s Day Book Giveaway!

But there’s only one that produces a—hopefully—delicious result: cooking! And although any time of year is great for whipping up something delightful in the kitchen—hey, we always gotta eat—winter is… Read more »

A Picture Book Tells A Holocaust Story: The Tattered Prayer Book

The Tattered Prayer Book came across my desk a few months ago, and I found it poignant and well done; however, I got caught up with some other blogging ideas percolating in my brain and never got around to writing about this powerful picture book. Today, I’d like to correct that.

Guest: Becky Sarah, Grandparenting Expert

As friends of mine become first-time grandmothers, I like to give them a gift to mark this cherished milestone in their lives. I’ve given darling frames to two women and a small book with a humorous, light-hearted look at grandparenting to a third. But now I’ve come across another great choice: Grandmothering:Real Life in Real… Read more »

Hillary…A Woman of Valor

Last week, I had the privilege of attending a benefit luncheon at which the former Secretary of State and former U.S. Senator from New York was the featured guest speaker. As the purpose of this occasion was to raise funds for charitable purposes, rather than political ones, no press was allowed inside the room (and… Read more »
